Cluster of Excellence IntCDC receives funding for a further seven years!

The Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Transformative Architecture” (IntCDC), together with the participating institutions, the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems and Bauhaus Earth, will receive a further seven years funding as part of the Excellence Strategy.

IntCDC Building

The University of Stuttgart is building a new research centre, the IntCDC Building, for the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC on the Vaihingen campus. The new building will bring together the researchers from seven faculties of the university and house the necessary research infrastructure.

Wangen Tower

Set in the scenic landscape of the western Allgäu, the Wangen Tower is an architectural landmark and pioneering timber structure for the Landesgartenschau 2024. Based on research conducted at IntCDC, the tower is the very first multi-level, walkable building to use self-shaped, structural timber components.

Hybrid Flax Pavilion

With the central pavilion for the Landesgartenschau 2024 in Wangen, the IntCDC Cluster of Excellence has for the first time realised a wood-natural fibre hybrid construction as an alternative to conventional building methods. It combines slender cross-laminated timber with robotically wound flax fibre bodies in a novel, resource-saving load-bearing system made from regional, bio-based building materials with a local tradition.

livMatS Biomimetic Shell

The distinctive livMatS Biomimetic Shell at the FIT Freiburg, with its resource-efficient, fully demountable and reusable segmented timber shell construction, is a joint project of the Clusters of Excellence IntCDC and livMatS at the University of Freiburg. The design of the building envelope is based on the morphological principles of the plate skeleton of sea urchins.

livMatS Pavilion

The livMatS Pavilion in the Botanical Garden of the University of Freiburg is the result of a successful collaboration between the Clusters of Excellence IntCDC and livMatS and offers a resource-saving alternative to conventional construction methods. It is the first building with a load-bearing structure made entirely of robotically wound flax fibres, a material that is naturally renewable, biodegradable and regionally available in Central Europe.

Maison Fibre

With Maison Fibre, exhibited at the 17th Venice Biennale of Architecture 2021, the Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD) and the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE), both part of the IntCDC, presented a full-scale inhabitable installation made entirely of robotically produced, fibrous building elements, constituting the very first multi-storey structure of its kind.

Instrumentation Platforms

Three interlinked instrumentation platforms provide the central hardware for our research into behaviour-based, sensor-driven, cyber-physical construction at IntCDC: the Off-Site Prefabrication Instrumentation Platform, the On-Site Construction Instrumentation Platform and the On-Site Fabrication, Fitting and Finishing Instrumentation Platform.

The Cluster of Excellence IntCDC - Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Transformative Architecture (2019-2032) aims to lay the methodological foundations for the urgently needed, future-proof and climate-positive transformation of the way buildings are designed and constructed. Based on highly interdisciplinary and integrative research, IntCDC seeks to harness the full potential of digital technologies to concurrently advance computational design and engineering methods, cyber-physical fabrication, construction and renovation processes, and next generation material and building systems.
