In his lecture, Mike Schlaich presents what designing and constructing the supporting structures is and how this is taught at the Institute of Civil Engineering at the TU Berlin. This is done using examples from research, teaching and practice.
Mike Schlaich is one of the Managing Directors of schlaich bergermann partner (sbp), Professor of Conceptual and Structural Design at the Technische Universität Berlin and certified German proof checking engineer. His executed projects range from signature bridges and long-span roofs to stadia, office and highrise buildings and other exeptional structures.
Mike´s research work includes extradosed bridges, bending and fatigue of strands for bridge cables, carbon fibre tension elements, movable and adaptive structures, as well as the use of new materials such as carbon and infra-lightweight concrete. He is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and a gold medalist of IStructE.
