„Brauchen wir feministsche Perspektiven in der Entwicklung von Robotern?“

On 8 July 2025,  Cordula Kropp, Institute for Social Sciences (SOWI) and Gili Ron, Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD/CA) will give a lecture on „Brauchen wir feministsche Perspektiven in der Entwicklung von Robotern?“. The lecture is part of the „Gender und Diversity in Sprache, Gesellschaft, Forschung und Praxis” lecture series, organised by uniqUS – Unit for Inclusive University Culture at the University of Stuttgart.

Abstract

(DE) Was bedeutet es, Technologie verantwortlich zu entwickeln und welche Rolle spielen dabei feministische Perspektiven? Technologieentwicklung wird oft als eine rein technische Herausforderung betrachtet: Gesucht werden passende technische Mittel als Antwort auf bestehende Nutzerwünsche. Doch tatsächlich gestaltet Technologieentwicklung nicht nur diese Möglichkeiten und Wünsche, sie prägt auch zukünftige Handlungsspielräume und Entwicklungswege. Technologie ist nicht „neutral“ – und deshalb ein zentrales Thema feministischer Perspektiven auf Gleichstellung, Gleichberechtigung und verantwortliche Wissenschaft. Der Vortrag beleuchtet, welche konkreten Impulse sich aus diesen Perspektiven für die Robotik ergeben. Dabei greifen wir auf die gemeinsame Forschung im Exzellenzcluster „Integrative Computational Sesign and Construction for Architecture“ sowie im von IRIS geförderten Projekt „Towards Human-Robot Co-Agency: AI and Feminist Technoscience Perspectives for Diversity, Demography, and Democracy“ zurück. 

(EN) What does it mean to develop technology responsibly – and what role do feminist perspectives play in this process? Technology development is often viewed as a purely technical challenge: the search for suitable technical means in response to existing user needs. But in fact, technology development not only shapes these possibilities and needs – it also defines future scopes for action and directions of development. Technology is not "neutral" – which is why it is a central concern of feminist perspectives on equality, equity, and responsible research and innovation. This lecture explores the concrete impulses these perspectives offer for the field of robotics. It draws on joint research within the Excellence Cluster "Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture" as well as the IRIS-funded project "Towards Human-Robot Co-Agency: AI and Feminist Technoscience Perspectives for Diversity, Demography, and Democracy.“
