IntCDC Key Skills Workshop – Visual Science Communication

(Early Career in cooperation with PR & Communications)

Workshop lecturer: Michael Pelzer (RHET AI Center, University of Tuebingen)

Visualisations and infographics are an important part of scientific papers, posters and talks: well-designed graphical elements can help to convey the core message of a paper, summarise complex research results in an effective and easy-to-understand way, or attract the interest and attention of a wider audience.

This interactive workshop supports participants in gaining a better understanding of visual science communication and guides them to improve their visual communication skills. The workshop conveys creative techniques and design strategies that help to produce clear and effective graphical illustrations of scientific concepts, data and ideas. Working together on concrete examples, participants are invited to apply their skills in practice to (further) develop a visualisation related to their research.

Content

The workshop will provide

  • an introduction to the opportunities and challenges of visual science communication
  • an overview of creative techniques, tools, and basic design strategies
  • practical examples and exercises following a hands-on approach
Objectives

The workshops aims to

  • explore basic aspects of visual science communication and convey principles of successful design
  • support participants in attracting more attention to their research and emphasising its relevance by fostering effective visualisation
  • pursue a practical approach and provide opportunities to work on visualisations related to the participants' own research
Skills

At the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to

  • define clear and targeted key messages related to their research
  • link their message(s) to visual ideas
  • apply insights into design strategies and audience focus to develop effective approaches for scientific visualisation
  • use illustrations to connect with different audiences, promote their visibility as researchers and establish the relevance of their work
