SUMMARY:Early Career meets Visiting Professor Mariana Popescu
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to offer all early career researchers the opportunity to engage in an open experience exchange with our Visiting Professor Mariana Popescu on Wednesday, 27 November 2024.\nMariana Popescu is visiting us from TU Delft, where she is Assistant Professor of Digital Fabrication – Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences – Department of Materials, Mechanics, Management and Design. Mariana is a computational architect and structural designer with a strong interest in innovative ways of approaching the fabrication process and use of materials in construction. \nHer area of expertise is computational and parametric design with a focus on digital fabrication and sustainable design. Her extensive involvement in projects related to promoting sustainability has led to a multilateral development of skills, which combine the fields of architecture, engineering, computational design and digital fabrication. Her research is centred around digitally fabricated stay-in-place formwork systems for complex concrete geometries using 3D-knitting techniques. Her interest in additive manufacturing technologies, structural efficiency, and fabrication with material effectiveness.\nSince 2019 Mariana Popescu holds a Ph.D. from ETH Zürich assessing the development of KnitCrete, a novel, material-saving, labour-reducing, cost-effective formwork system for casting of doubly-curved geometries in concrete using 3D knitting. She was named a “Pioneer” on the MIT Technology review global list of “35 innovators under 35”. \nTo learn more about Mariana Popescu, please visit her website.\nIn this interdisciplinary seminar, Mariana Popescu will briefly present aspects of her work, but the focus will be on the questions and issues raised by the EC participants in this seminar. They will each give a 5 minute presentation of their work and will have the opportunity to discuss topics related to their doctoral or postdoctoral research with Mariana Popescu in an informal setting.\nEC researchers can also discuss possible career paths and publishing strategies. This may also be a starting point for bilateral discussions at a later date.\n
