INTEGRATIVE MULTI-SCALE MODELLING FOR BIOREGIONAL CONSTRUCTION
RP 37-1 develops an integrative multi-scale modelling framework to assess the impacts of scaling bio-based construction across regional and global contexts. The project addresses the need to better understand how increasing demand for bio-based building systems affects material flows, land use, economic dynamics, and ecological systems.
By linking macro-economic modelling with spatially explicit life cycle assessment and geospatial analysis, the research captures interactions between global value chains and regionally differentiated resource availability and environmental constraints. This enables the evaluation of trade-offs and synergies between climate mitigation, biodiversity, and resource use in the transition towards bio-based construction.
A central component of the project is a bioregional case study focusing on Stuttgart and its surrounding region. Urban construction and renovation demand is systematically connected to regional biomass supply and global market dynamics, allowing for the assessment of locally grounded yet globally embedded transformation pathways.
Through iterative integration of economic, environmental, and spatial perspectives, the project generates scenario-based insights into sustainable material strategies. The resulting framework supports the development of regionally optimized construction approaches and provides a transferable methodology for analysing bio-based construction systems across different contexts.
