Based on research conducted at the Cluster of Excellence Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture (IntCDC) at the University of Stuttgart, the tower is the very first multi-level, walkable building to use self-shaped, structural timber components.
The jury, chaired by Markus Lager, an architect and professor of interdisciplinary timber construction at the University of Applied Sciences in Erfurt, described the Wangen Tower as an “innovative structure of great elegance” that “transforms the material’s natural shrinkage into an innovative design.”
The Baden-Württemberg Timber Construction Award is presented under the auspices of the Baden-Württemberg Timber Construction Initiative and with the patronage of the Ministry of Food, Rural Affairs, and Consumer Protection. The award honors outstanding buildings, building concepts, and forward-looking innovations from Baden-Württemberg that engage intensively with wood as the sustainable building material of our time. The award is aimed at building owners, planners, and contractors alike and recognizes the overall achievement in the pursuit of exemplary timber construction projects.
