What does it look like when computational design and robotic fabrication come together to transform architecture?
In this three-part YouTube documentary, Hans Jakob Wagner and the Computational Wood Architecture research group give the Archi-Tech Network team a behind-the-scenes look at their work at the University of Stuttgart.
The documentary traces their research, from experimental structures such as the BUGA Wood Pavilion, to the IntCDC Building where many of these technologies are now being implemented on an architectural scale.
The ICD team gives insights into computational design and optimisation for timber structures, robotic fabrication, custom robotic tools, segmented timber shells, long-span floor slabs, automated assembly, and on-site construction. They also demonstrate the direct connection from Rhino and Grasshopper to industrial robots, showing how digital fabrication can enable more efficient construction and new architectural possibilities.
