Interdisciplinary research encompassing architecture, structural engineering, building physics, engineering geodesy, manufacturing and systems engineering, computer science and robotics, and human and social sciences is the basis for the development of an overarching methodology of “co-designing” methods, processes and systems.

The Visiting IntCDC Institutes Networking Programme (ViNe) aims to promote mutual acquaintance, interdisciplinary exchange and cross-disciplinary understanding between researchers from the eighteen institutes of the University of Stuttgart and one MPI working together in the Cluster.

In the Networking Session “Visiting Social Sciences”, Cordula Kropp, together with Yana Boeva and Kathrin Braun, gave a talk on “Digitising AEC – Inspecting the Political Techo-Economy of Building Information Modelling”.

After a brief historical outline of technology assessment and a definition of socio-technical transformations and their co-design in TA, she explored the political techno-economy of BIM and its significance for the digitisation of AEC. Drivers, hopes and risks of the platformisation and platform capitalism, especially the role of software and service providers such as Autodesk and its BIM software Revit, were intensively discussed, as well as the need to teach/acquire programming skills.

The great interest and the lively and fruitful discussion show the importance of an interdisciplinary exchange for the researchers in the cluster. “Visits” to other institutes are planned.

More information on further Visiting IntCDC Institutes Networking programme (ViNe) as well as the slides of Cordula Kropp's presentation can be found on Confluence.
