On 15 October 2025, IntCDC Early-Career Researchers had the opportunity to participate in an excursion to the School of Textiles at the University of Reutlingen. After an introduction to the TEXOVERSUM building, we were given a behind-the-scenes look at a guided tour of the technology labs along the entire textile process chain and interdisciplinary product development at the laboratories for spinning, weaving, nonwovens, and knitting, as well as the Klick lab, a workspace for interdisciplinary product development.
Martina Gerbig from the TEXOVERSUM, and her colleagues, Charlott Braun & Betartice Steck (nonwovens), and Marlen Wagner (flat knitting) introduced us to the research and development in the textile production chain and we gained insights into the work area for interdisciplinary product development, technical textiles and their applications, e.g. in the outdoor, aerospace, automotive and architecture sectors. We learned more about advanced materials that are redefining the textile world with their versatile applications and sustainable properties.
The laboratories of the Faculty of Textiles in the TEXOVERSUM are used both for training students to become the specialists and managers of tomorrow and for researching and developing new products. For example, products from publicly funded projects or industrial projects can be practically developed, tested and implemented there.

Martina Gerbig (Dipl.-Ing. FH) studied textile engineering at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences. She has extensive experience in the textile industry, as well as in research and teaching. She is a research associate in the Department of Textile Technology and Sustainability at Texoversum. She leads the Stuttgart regional group of dib e.V. (deutscher ingenieurinnenbund e.V.). She is member of VDTF (Verein deutscher Textilfachleute).

A big "thank you" to the team of TEXOVERSUM, especially to Martina Gerbig, a textile engineer very open to networking and collaboration, as evidenced by her membership in dib e.V. and VDTF.
Our ViNe networking programme aims to promote mutual acquaintance, interdisciplinary exchange and cross-disciplinary understanding between IntCDC researchers from around eighteen institutes at the University of Stuttgart and one MPI, encompassing architecture, structural engineering, building physics, engineering geodesy, manufacturing and systems engineering, computer science, robotics, and human and social sciences.
