In his lecture, Mike Schlaich will explain what designing and constructing of supporting structures is and how it is taught at the Institute of Civil Engineering at the TU Berlin. This will be done using examples from research, teaching and practice.
Mike Schlaich is one of the Managing Directors of schlaich bergermann partner (sbp), Professor of Conceptual and Structural Design at the Technical University of Berlin and certified German proof-checking engineer. His executed projects range from signature bridges and long-span roofs to stadia, office and high-rise buildings and other exceptional structures.
Mike's research interests include extradosed bridges, bending and fatigue of strands for bridge cables, carbon fibre tension elements, movable and adaptive structures, and the use of new materials such as carbon and infra-lightweight concrete. He is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and an of IStructE gold medalist.
